For a linguist, researching cross-neurotype spoken communication between autistic and non-autistic people, I spent an awful lot of my doctoral period thinking about non-human communication.
After an encounter with “chicken of the woods” a few years ago, which I wrote about at the time (but think it might be too unhinged to share publicly!) I have long suspected that some fungus fruiting bodies are asking to be eaten.
I think we mignt be a similar age, I found your description of childhood mementoes very nostalgic and I’d forgotten all about printing off emails. glad you got such a lush reply from the truffle hunter. Love how you told this story. Glad to have found someone else writing about interspecies connections on here 🐗🐕🐾🌳🍄🟫
Ha! It sounds like a fascinating read! There's something so intense about fungi, I can totally see that..
Spending a day surrounded by the childhood trivia was real nostalgia trip! I appreciate it all so much more with a bit of distance, the pace of life then: 'playing out' in the cul-de-sac and making up games...
It's a really unfinished thought - how communication and connections happens between species. I spent over a decade keeping honeybees and that was a whole other thing, connecting with a hive and individual insect beings. I'm glad too! Looking forward to reading more :)
Gosh I bet the bees were good teachers. I remember a penny drop moment for me when I was using a hedge trimmer at work and these big flies kept flying at my face fending me off and I thought “these flies are really sentient aren’t they” and now I can’t believe I ever thought otherwise. Yes how does connection happen between species - such a fascinating question

This was a beautiful piece!
So rich! Flashback-inducing to Drumblair and the truffle, the wedding, the climbing and life drawing with you. So good to read.
Aww. Such beautiful times xx
Croatia was truffle heaven! I've eaten so many truffles I might have become one!
Ha! Watch out, I might come snuffling after you!
I had no idea how RAVENOUS I was for

Hahah, it's the truffle magic. They're working on your hunger receptors...
